DAY 1 Fri. Pick up from airport Kuala Namu Airport or Medan accommodation 4 hour long slow drive to Bukit Lawang. If you are picked up in the morning, visit the Friday market at Gotong Royong around lunch time on the way to your guest house. Accommodation Batu Mandi Guest House.
DAY 2. Sat. Morning head to Gelugur Hot Springs (2 hour slow drive in 4WD each way). Pack for a purpose school visit on the way of it’s a school day (school days mon to sat). In the evening try to learn some Indonesian with the locals or just chill listening to the locals sing and play the guitar. Batu Mandi Guest House.
DAY3 Sun. After breakfast, head off on a half day orangutan jungle trek (chicken trek – easy please) in Gunung Leuser National Park via rubber plantation for wildlife & orangutan spotting, fruit included for morning tea. Come back via ‘On the Rocks’ for a cool drink and to spot wild life from the balcony. You can buy your lunch here if you would like. You can arrange a massage late afternoon/early evening (cost not included 150.000 IDR pp 1hour) . Option to do a full day harder trek (cost $300.000IDR extra) today. In the evening, option to go to Jungle Cinema with BBQ dinner tonight, please check to see that it is on this evening (cost not included 100.000 IDR pp for movie and bbq chicken/fish with rice). DAY 4 Mon. Today we head to Tangkahan in the morning (2.5 hour slow drive on mostly dirt road) to arrive late morning for late morning or early afternoon elephant washing (note elephants are not available on fridays). Then head back to Bukit Lawang late afternoon/early evening. Chill out in the evening listening to the locals sing and play the guitar or relax at your guest house. DAY 5 Tues. Free morning to explore local village. Afternoon becak (tuk tuk) village tour of rice fields, tofu and brown sugar processing. Batu Mandi.
Day 6 Wed. This is the start 4 day walk. Mid morning walk to Batu Kapal via bat cave if you would like to have a look (cost of entry not included). Rest of afternoon to explore the river and check out Ship Cave (torch). Guitar around the campfire in the evening. Maybe go for a night walk. Camp at Batu Kapal Hut.
Day 7 Thurs. Head off in the morning to continue trek to Selang Pangeran past villages, rivers and farm land. In afternoon help teach English to the kids in the village from 2-4pm (Afternoon volunteer English school operates mon to thurs 2 -4 pm) . Camp at Selang Pangeran Hut.
Day 8 Fri. This morning donate and plant a tree for you and your family as part of Jungle Eddies reforestation conservation program. Jungle Eddie to talk about the program (donation not included). Head off late morning to continue trek past villages, rivers and farm land. Arrive at the Berkeil river camp. Set up camp, go swimming or fishing and relax by the river.
Day 9. Sat. This morning we leave this camp site to river tube to the batu katak guest house (approx 1.5hours tubing on the river through some beautiful scenery). Arrive around lunch time. Afternoon an informal Indonesian cooking class mid afternoon, where you get to cook with the locals and share a meal in the evening with your guides and the locals. Day 10 Sun. Early morning walk to spot wildlife and hopefully gibbon along the base of the hills, followed by a walk back through the village via Bat Cave (take torch). Free afternoon to relax or explore the river. Accommodation Batu Katak Guest House.
Day 11 Mon. Free morning – optional activity to walk to rafflesia flower if it is in flower (flowers on a full moon bimonthly) or see the titanium flower (largest flower in the world) 2.5 hour walk each way or tube back (cost of activity not included). Afternoon opportunity to help the children in the village – teaching English 2-4pm (volunteer English school operates mon & tues 2-4pm). Bonfire and guitar on the river for your last night. Day 12 Tue. In morning check out from Batu Katak for 4 hour drive to Medan airport or accommodation. Visit Grand Mosque and Palace in the morning on the way if enough time.
