All of our tours and treks are for a minimum of two people, however we love travelling alone also so if you are a solo traveller please enquire for prices.

Our conservation programs aim to safeguard the wildlife and their natural habitat, allowing you to see orangutans swinging past your room in their undisturbed environment. Just an hour’s trek or a 15-minute motorbike ride from Bukit Lawang is our jewel of the jungle, a critical bio link corridor for over 15 wild orangutans and various wildlife. The site is home to primates, pangolin, porcupines, Thomas Leaf Monkeys, pig-tail macaques, silver leaf monkeys, monitor lizards, leopard cats, civet cats and many more. You can see them in their natural habitat as they traverse the national park borders. Our land is essential for their survival amid deforestation.  Join us for activities to reduce your footprint while travelling  like animal spotting, wildlife monitoring, reforestation, plastics upcycling.  ! Stay at our jungle villa Hutan Subur, offering private  luxury and relaxation amidst the jungle or in one of our three private  jungle bungalows  for immersion into the operating conservation site.

Day 3. Explore the jungle a little more before tube rafting back along the river into Bukit Lawang township. A great way to see the jungle from a different perspective and cool off after your day. Arrive back between 2 – 4 pm. Breakfast, lunch and dinner plus rafting, park entry fees and professional, highly trained guide all included. Stay tonight in our accomodation Happy Ria in Bukit Lawang or continue your trek to our Luxe Jungle Villa.

Day 4. After breakfast head back to Medan via private car transport for your onwards journey.

Day 4

Join our local guides on this half day tour of the rice fields and villages  by tuk tuk or motorbike. See how the locals live and experience this cultural journey. Visit cottage industries, rice hulling and drying, learn  where tofu comes from and even bamboo weaving. On Fridays, experience the local produce market a famous bustling market for all local produce. Sample the fruits and see how the locals do their weekly shop.  In the afternoon relax in your accomodation and get a traditional massage, you are on holidays after all !

Option to  join our conservation site for orangutan monitoring and activities on site, a short motorbike ride from Bukit Lawang will bring you to pristine rainforest that is home to over 15 wild orangutans who freely course through the property. Learn about the different types of vegetation grown on the borders of the national park, participate in reforestation or plastics upcycling, join the team for monitoring to search for orangutans and other primates and record their behaviours. Enjoy a swim in the landak river and a BBQ lunch. Stay tonight in Happy Ria accomodation or onsite in our luxe Jungle Villa for the real jungle experience.

Day 5

Your tour ends today, transfer back to Medan via private car for your onwards travel.

Day 1. Drive  from Bukit Lawang to Berastagi  (~4 hours ) in private, air conditioned car. Visit the Berastagi fruit and flower markets and Gundaling Lookout, hot spring baths or Buddhist temple when you arrive at Berastagi. Stay overnight night in Berastagi Mountain View accommodation. 

Day 2. Wake up early for a sunrise hike at the stunning Sibayak Volcano. At 2212 m this amazing volcano dominates the town of Berastagi. After your climb we start the drive to the magnificent sipiso Piso waterfall on way to Lake Toba. Arrive at lake in the afternoon and take ferry to Samosir Island. We offer accomodation on the waters edge for standard guesthouse rooms or superior rooms.

Day 3. Today visit the local ancient Batak king’s residence (Raja Siallagan) in Samosir island, a great way to look back into the cultural history of this special place.   Choose what you would like to do for the rest of the day: walk around the local village or lake, hire a bicycle, visit museum, traditional dancing and markets or just chill out by the lake. Car & driver available for your use. Stay on the waters edge in either standard or superior accomodation.

Day 4. Option to relax and explore the island or take a boat around the lake (cost extra) stay tonight at either standard or superior accomodation.

Day 2.

Bukit Lawang and Tangkahan Elephants and Orangutans Adventure 4 Days 3 Nights

Day 1. Travel from Medan to us here in Bukit Lawang for 4 hours by private air conditioned car. Once arriving in Bukit Lawang, settle in to our accomodation Happy Ria. A charming, wooden 3 storey house set amongst the jungle with views to the National Park, private kitchen, 2 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms and an outdoor lounge area will have you relaxing in style for your first night in this special town.

Day 2. This morning head off on a 6 hour jungle trek into the Gunung Leuser National Park. The last remaining park where critically endangered orangutan, tiger, elephant and rhino all live together. Raft back to Bukit Lawang cooling off as the river courses it’s way from the park back into Bukit Lawang township. Includes raft tubing and lunch. Stay tonight in Happy Ria.

Day 3. After breakfast begin your journey by 4WD to Tangkahan (2.5-3 hour drive on mostly dirt road). Arrive in this village on the skirts of the national park  around lunch time. In the afternoon join the elephant washing and then continue on small boat to Tangkahan Eco Glamping for all inclusive package, wander through their gardens, relax in the jungle trampoline and spend the night under the stars with a specially prepared meal from garden to plate. Look out for wild elephants and other wildlife as you view the national park from your accomodation OR enquire about private luxury villa accomodation nestled on the jungle edge. 

Day 4. After breakfast take a short hike approximately 40 mins to search for the elephants who have been rescued from conflict here. Enjoy a specially prepared jungle lunch having a close encounter with these gentle giants.  Explore the hot springs and bamboo waterfall if time .  Rubber raft tube back into Tangkahan township and enjoy a cool drink before continuing onto Medan for your onwards journey or accommodation or return back to Bukit Lawang.

7 day package

Day 1. Travel from Medan to us here in Bukit Lawang for 4 hours by private air conditioned car. Once arriving in Bukit Lawang, settle in to our accomodation Happy Ria. A  charming, wooden 3 storey house set amongst the jungle with views to the National Park, kitchen, 2 bathrooms, outdoor lounge area. 

Day 2. This morning head off on a 3 hour or 6 hour jungle trek into the Gunung Leuser National Park. The last remaining park where critically endangered orangutan, tiger, elephant and rhino all live together. Raft back to Bukit Lawang cooling off as the river courses it’s way from the park back into Bukit Lawang township. 6 hour trek includes rafting and lunch. 

Day 3. Participate in a village tour to see how the locals live as you meander through the rice fields via tuk tuk on Fridays visit the famous traditional market, OR  join our volunteer program for the day and assist in monitoring the wild orangutans, reforestation program and plastics upcycling, stay tonight in our luxe Jungle Villa and spot orangutan swinging past your window as you sleep to the soothing sounds of the rainforest from the comfort of your own private stay.

Day 4. After breakfast head  to Batu Rongring, a small village that serves part of our community focused projects ’DreamClass’ which offers education for the children about conservation and the environment. This jungle village is also home to one of the largest trees on the world. Check into Sumatran Jungle Huts, our partners on this side of the national Park who offer beautiful hut style accomodation set  beside the amazing river.  The owner is a local ranger with endless knowledge about the park and its inhabitants. He will guide you to the majestic large tree ( 2 hour hike /exploration)  for an experience you won’t forget,  cool off by the river then option to do a traditional medicine class, take a traditional massage, or do a night spotting walk to look for leopard cats and porcupines!

 Day 5. Head to Tangkahan ( about a 2.5 hour drive off road  ) for an afternoon with the elephants. The elephants here have been rescued from conflict on the borders of the national park. You can spend time with these gentle giants ( although much smaller than their African counterparts!) . All proceeds go back into the conservation of the species here on the borders of the park. Take a small boat up to your luxury glamping site ( our personal favourite !)  for an all inclusive package of delicious dinner, breakfast and lunch in Bedouin tent style accomodation set high on the river overlooking the National Park. Listen for the sounds of the gibbon calls and immerse yourself in this unique place. Spend time in the garden and harvest your own vegetables for dinner, if you wish. 

Day 6. Explore the hot springs after breakfast and lunch by the bamboo waterfall, afterwards take a tube ride back into Tangkahan village . Option to end tour this afternoon and head back to Medan from Tangkahan to rest before onward travels.

DAY 3. Immerse yourself in the local culture and join a village tour by motorbike or becak

(Tuk Tuk) . Meander through the rice fields and see how local produce such as tofu, brown sugar and other locally sourced produce are made with your experienced guide.   Visit Gotong Royong fruit, vegetable and rubber market (market day Friday) explore the river, visit local schools, join a wood carving class, traditional cooking class and many more options ( these activities at extra cost, see activities list  ). DAY 4. After breakfast, head off on an hours trek to our unique conservation site,  visiting  the  bat cave along the way. Enjoy lunch by the landak river and then journey through pristine caves and rainforest to arrive  at our operating project site. Join the volunteers and participate in the wildlife programs such as a night monitoring walks and search for nocturnal animals such as slow loris and civet cats. Enjoy the privacy of our luxe jungle villa, Hutan Subur and spot orangutan swinging past your window. Or immerse yourself in the life of a volunteer and stay onsite at Batu Kapal.

DAY 5. After breakfast head off on a trek to the Berkeil River through rubber plantations, rice fields, farm land and villages to make camp for the night, relax and explore the surrounds of this unique place. Enjoy your specially prepared meal by campfire and sleep to the gentle sounds of the river. Stay one night here.

DAY 6. After your delicious camp breakfast, tube raft down to Batu Katak  guest house. Afternoon options for traditional medicine class. Also join a half day gibbon trek if arriving in time to spot local wildlife, or take a village walk to see local village life. Accommodation Batu Katak Guesthouse.

Day 7. This morning head off to see the Rafflesia flower, if in flower, optional caving adventure or visit the local school and participate in our Pack for a Purpose program. Leave Batu katak today and continue onto Medan for your onwards travel.

Day 2.

Two day trek begins. After breakfast , around 9 am , your guides will meet you to begin your overnight jungle trek into the Gunung Leuser National Park. This park is home to orangutan and some of the world’s most biodiversity flora and fauna. Wildlife spotting along the way you will reach your jungle camp by the river in the afternoon. Stay one night here relaxing and enjoying your night under the stars.

Day 3.

Explore the jungle a little more before tube rafting back along the river into Bukit Lawang township. A great way to see the jungle from a different perspective and cool off after your day. Arrive back between 2 – 4 pm and enjoy a well earned rest in your accomodation at Happy Ria. Breakfast, lunch and dinner plus rafting, park entry fees and professional, highly trained guide all included.

Day 4

Join  our conservation site for orangutan monitoring and activities on site, a short motorbike ride from Bukit Lawang or a one hour walk through the borders of the national park where you will learn about local produce and farming will bring you to pristine rainforest that is home to over 15 wild orangutans who freely course through the property. Learn about the different types of vegetation grown on the borders of the national park, participate in reforestation or plastics upcycling, join the team for a monitoring walk to search for orangutans and record their behaviours. Stay tonight in our jungle luxe villa, Hutan Subur,  where you can experience the energy of the wild jungle and spot orangutans swinging past your window from the comfort of your two bedroom villa.  

Day 5

After breakfast on the terrace of your private villa, walk back into Bukit Lawang or stay for the morning participating in the volunteer activities.

 Once in Bukit Lawang, participate in activities and we can arrange these once you arrive 

– rice fields tour with becak 550,000 IDR pp

– cooking class 300,000 IDR pp

– get a traditional massage 250,000 IDR pp

– visit the bat cave with lunch by Landak River around 3-4 hours ( or you could all do this on your way to Batu Kapal conservation on day 4 ) 800,000 IDR pp

Day 6

Time to get on the road ! Drive to Berastagi ( ~4 hours ) by private air conditioned car, sightseeing along the way.  As climate gets cooler in this mountainous country side enjoy the change in landscape. Visit the bustling and colourful fruit and flower market on arrival, the small Batak museum and learn about the local Batak Karo culture, visit Gundaling Lookout for sunset and stay in Berastagi guesthouse accomodation for one night. Get a Good rest before your early rise tomorrow.

Day 7

 Wake up early, around 5 am for your sunrise trek up Sibayak volcano (~3-4 hours). After your morning climb, visit the  hot springs for a dip and then head off to the magnificent Sipiso Piso waterfall on the way to Lake Toba. Arrive late afternoon and take ferry across to Samosir Island. Stay at Tuk Tuk Timbal bungalows  on the waters edge. 

Day 8

Today visit local Batak king’s residence (Raja Siallagan). Choose what you would like to do for the rest of the day walk around the local village or visit Batak museum and traditional Tomok village, explore the ancient tomb of Sidabutar Kings, see the Batak traditional puppet dance, or just relax by the lake. Car & driver available for your use whilst on the island.  Stay  at Tuk Tuk Timbal bungalows. 

Day 9

Option to relax and explore the island more, visit the sights not seen yesterday or take a boat around the lake. This boat can be arranged by your guide for an extra cost. Stay tonight on the waters edge at Tuk Tuk Timbal bungalows.

Day 10

 Your tour ends today, drive about 4-5 hours back to Medan by private air conditioned car  for your flight or onwards travel.

Fitness level – easy. This tour is designed for families and friends looking for a leisurely nature and cultural holiday.

DAY 1.  Pick up from airport Kuala Namu or Medan accommodation. 4-5 hours  drive to Tangkahan. In the afternoon, explore river, small waterfall and hot springs or just chill out at accomodation at Tangkahan Eco Glamping. Option to join the elephant washing this afternoon . Take a small boat up to your luxury glamping site ( our personal favourite !)  for an all inclusive package of delicious dinner, breakfast and lunch in Bedouin tent style accomodation set high on the river overlooking the National Park. Listen for the sounds of the gibbon calls and immerse yourself in this unique place. Spend time in the garden and harvest your own vegetables for dinner, if you wish. 

Day 2. After breakfast take a short hike to the hot springs, enjoy lunch by the bamboo waterfall and tube raft  back down into Tangkahan main village . Cool off with a drink before your trip by 4wd to Bukit Lawang. Stay tonight in Happy Ria, Bukit Lawang. A beautiful traditionally decorated  3 storey house set amongst the jungle with views to the national park (breakfast included).

Day 3. Flexible day, relax and explore the river and village of Bukit Lawang. Or choose an activites from our activity list, such as tubing down Bohorok River, traditional cooking class, village tour by becak (tuk tuk), visit to the local schools, explore the traditional market on a Friday, wood carving class, traditional massage and many more. Accommodation Bukit Lawang Happy Ria guesthouse.

Day 4. After breakfast head off on a half day 6 hour jungle trek in Gunung Leuser National Park to spot wildlife & orangutans. This includes tube rafting back into Bukit Lawang town after your trek into the jungle.   (Note an over night jungle trek can be arranged at additional cost) Rest well tonight in our accomodation Happy Ria.

DAY 5. Visit our unique conservation site and the bat cave on the way! Just an hour’s trek or a 15-minute motorbike ride from Bukit Lawang is our unique conservation site, a critical bio link corridor for over 15 wild orangutans and various wildlife. The site is home to primates, pangolin, porcupines, Thomas Leaf Monkeys, pig-tail macaques, silver leaf monkeys, monitor lizards, leopard cats, and many more. You can see them in their natural habitat as they traverse the national park borders. Our land is essential for their survival amid deforestation. Join us for activities to reduce your footprint while travelling  like animal spotting, wildlife monitoring, reforestation, plant a tree in your name, plastics upcycling and also relaxing by  the landak river.  Stay at our jungle villa Hutan Subur, offering private  luxury and relaxation amidst the jungle or in one of our three private  jungle bungalows  for immersion into the operating conservation site.  

DAY 6.  Morning to explore the river, join an early morning wildlife monitoring walk with the volunteers and record movements of the wild orangutans and other primates  who call this home (cost extra donated to the conservation program) or let your guide take you through the caves on the property searching for porcupines from the unique limestone formations.  After lunch walk  back into to Bukit Lawang, cool off by the river and stay tonight in  Happy Ria guesthouse accomodation.

Day 7. Leave Bukit Lawang today to drive to the airport or Medan accommodation (4-5 hours) , option to visit the grand mosque and summer palace in Medan if enough time. Tour concludes today.

DAY 1. Pick up from Medan and drive to lake Toba, stopping at sights along the way. Lake Toba is the largest lake in southeast Asia and a natural wonder of the world. Arrive in the afternoon to catch a ferry across to the lake’s very own island, Samosir. Stay tonight by the waters edge in Tuk Tuk Timbal bungalows.

DAY 2.   Visit the traditional, ancient villages and local Batak King’s residence, see traditional dance displays, explore the island by bicycle or take a boat trip around the lake ( cost extra for bicycle hire and boat trip). The island culture is rich and vibrant and your guide will be sure you see the best of it. Stay tonight in Tuk Tuk Timbal.

DAY 3.  After breakfast, drive to Berastagi sightseeing along the way with destinations such as waterfalls and the Buddhist temple. Once in Berastagi, enjoy the  colourful fruit and flower markets , Gundaling lookout for sunset and local Batak Karo museum . Stay tonight in Berastagi.

DAY 4. Wake up early around 5am for a morning sunrise climb of  Sibayak volcano (2-3 hours return). Have a dip in the hot springs after your hike. Leave Berastagi this morning to drive through villages and national park to Buikit Lawang with time  to swim and cool off in the river  before dinner. Accommodation tonight in our guesthouse Happy Ria, in Bukit Lawang. A beautiful 3 storey chalet style house with views to the national park. 

DAY 5  After breakfast, start traditional tube rafting from Bukit Lawang to Bohorok, chance to spot orangutan, gibbon and hornbills along the way. A fun way to see the villages and jungle from your tube , small rapids offer some exhilarating parts alongside leisurely drifting.  Have a picnic lunch Indonesian style before continuing raft tubing where you will be met to be transported back to Bukit Lawang. Stay tonight in Happy Ria . Option in the afternoon to relax by the river, do a traditional wood carving class in the local gallery, get a traditional massage plus many more. 

DAY 6 Free day in Bukit Lawang – A day to rest and recover and to have a look around the local village or choose an option from our activities list.

DAY 7-11  5 DAY TREK – this is the start of  your  5 day Jungles, Rivers and Villages trek (fitness level medium).

DAY 7. This morning head off on your overnight Orangutan jungle trek to do some animal spotting. Look out for orangutans, monkeys, gibbons and more…. After lunch head deeper into the jungle leaving the tourists behind.  The terrain you will be trekking on will be extremely steep, but the views spectacular, with plenty of stops to help you to acclimatize and adjust to the local conditions. Gunung Leuser National Park is mostly mountainous, covering a million hectares, straddling the borders of North Sumatra and Aceh provinces. You will have time to relax and bathe in the Landak River before your evening dinner. You will be amazed at the delicious food your guides are able to cook up in the middle of the jungle! Your tent for the night will be a simple bamboo frame, covered with a plastic tarp. Adi Black jungle camp.

DAY 8.  This morning after a hearty jungle breakfast, pack up camp and  continue your trek to Batu Kapal through the national park and along the Landak River. Today you will be walking through the river, traversing the river a number of times, so please make sure you have  your river sandals handy. Arrive early afternoon at Batu Kapal to settle into your guest house. Time to relax or explore the local surrounds and swim in the river. Late afternoon/early evening participate in the Batu Kapal Conservation wildlife monitoring program. Go animal spotting and record your findings or plant some trees as part of the Batu Kapal Wildlife Biolink Corridor Program! Sumatra Rain Forest Eco Retreat  accommodation

DAY 9. This morning get ready for your exhilarating 3 hour rock scrambling and open caving adventure at Batu Kapal. Early afternoon. Head off at 12.30pm to trek to the Berkeil river past villages, rivers and farm land (1.5 hour walk). Accommodation Berkeil River camp. Or stay another night on-site at Batu Kapal, joining the monitoring and activities – this is an operating conservation site with volunteers and staff, although you will have your own private bungalow, if you would prefer to still get the benefits of being closely involved but have a more secluded, private stay then we do have accomodation next door in a private Villa at Hutan Subur. Both options are beautiful and a chance to see orangutan swing past your window !  Leave the next day for Berkeil river camp – day 10 walk to Berkeil River camp , stay one night, day 11 raft or hike to Batu katak guesthouse, day 12- check out and head back to Medan. 

Day 10. Today you have the option to raft tube to the Batu Katak guest house (approx 1.5 hours tubing on the river through some beautiful scenery) or option 2 is to continue trek to Batu Katak (a  3 to 4 hour trek) through the jungle for animal spotting, maybe wild orangutan, gibbon, macaques and Thomas leaf monkey. Arrive early afternoon.  Accommodation Batu Katak Guest House.

Day 11.  Early morning walk to spot wildlife and hopefully gibbon along the base of the hills, followed by a walk back through the village. Afternoon  Option  – opportunity to help with a children’s English lesson at the Tiger School 2-4pm if its a volunteer school day. Accommodation Batu Katak Guest House. 

Day 12.  In the morning check out to drive to Medan airport or your Medan accommodation (at your cost).

Option to add an extra day at our conservation site and stay 2 nights and join the afternoon or morning monitoring again on day 9. Instead of 2 nights at Batu Katak at the end of your trip. You may have the opportunity to see more orangutans with this option. Cost extra $150 AUD pp.
